Report on the Nelson Parks Regatta

Yesterday all the race participants enthusiastically agreed we had wonderful sailing in the cove; with winds into the upper teens, lots of wind shifts and plenty of gusts to keep us on our toes.  Racing was very tight and first place was not decided until the final race in which Roger Link with his regular crew, Derick Lynch, in Osprey won by a single point over Lorenzo Dialti and Peter Carrico who traded off skippering Picardy.  Peter's son, Pete, did a fine job on the wire.   Bob Blomquist with his long time crew of Donna and Jim Reuter in Gracie were very consistent with four 3rds, but won the final of the five races and came in third.  I raced with my cousin and regular crew, Doug Logan, and first -time Chesapeake 20 racer, Julia Crantz, in Stormy and finished fourth.  Clay Taylor with his cousin-in-law Todd Shedd finished fifth in Endeavor.   In the fourth race Endeavor on a port tack, hit Stormy in the port stern side and rode up on the deck, at the weather mark: lots of noise but not much damage since Stormy was heeled over.  Robin Hartge with his crew, Ron Tate, were lucky to finish the last race when their rudder popped off and  was held on by hand  as Spirit crossed the finish line for a sixth overall.   Contrary had a full complement of crew with Andrew Resnick, his son Nathan, and Richard Furcalo and his son Coby.  They all reported having had a good time learning C-20 racing.

After the five race series my wife, Judy, showed up at the exact right moment,  put on the air conditioning in the club house and brought out a cooler of beer, wine and refreshments as we talked Chesapeake 20s.

Pete Carrico, who raced 470s at WRSC in the 1970s, said that he has now checked off racing a Chesapeake 20  from his "bucket list" (but we invited him back for lots of encores).  Pete is a racing instructor at the Naval Academy.

Roger explained how not to tack within the two boat circle to me (still learning after being out of racing for so many years and never totally up-to-date on "recent" rule changes).

On behalf of the association, I presented the beautiful Maghomey perpetual trophy to Roger noting that we particularly appreciate giving trophies to Roger because he will take care of the busywork of adding his name to the trophy.

We enthusiastically thanked George Saunders and his race committee for a fabulous job.  They set square starting lines and well placed upwind marks, which meant shifting the committee boat and weather mark positions several times as the wind clocked southerly.  Those extra efforts in 90+ degree weather were definitely appreciated.

Summer Series:  The final summer series takes place this Sunday, July 27th at the usual 1 PM start time.  We are off a week and then the first Fall Series (yes, I said fall) begins Sunday August 10th, 2008.  We have a couple of boats available for guest skippers so they should contact me or Clay Taylor.
