CHESAPEAKE 20 NEWSLETTER
August 10, 2009
FALL SERIES: We hold the second race of our fall series
this coming Sunday, August 16, 2009 (the third and final
one is September 13th ).
We take a weekend off and
then we’ll be racing at the Tred Avon Y.C. Heritage Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, August 29-30th . Let me know if you are going to Oxford and if
you need a tow. This regatta is not one
to miss! It’s great fun.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 RACING: It is pretty
extraordinary for my cousin, Barry (“Big Bear”) Blalock to drive all the way
from Dayton, Ohio to race in our Sunday series but that’s exactly what he and
his wife, Angela, did. It is his second
trip to sail with us, and he is getting the crewing duties down pretty well. My regular crew (also relatives of mine) Doug
Logan and Alex de Tessieres solo raced on Picardy. So for us, it was a family affair in keeping
with Chesapeake 20 traditions. Doug and
Alex’s immediate goals they said: “Were not to hit another boat, especially Stormy or *Endeavor , not to capsize and to beat at least one or two boats.” They achieved all their goals.
*You know the deal with Endeavor: seems like it’s become a lightning
rod for other boats. Clay says he
painted her yellow to keep other boats from hitting her, but….”
Yesterday had to be the
hottest and most humid day of the year so far. We expected little wind but it
filled in nicely from the west at 10 to 14 knots around noon. The key to victory was getting in tune with
the gigantic wind shifts (Roger calls them thermals fighting with highs) as you
approached the weather mark. One moment,
you were fetching it, and assuming the lead, the next, you were severely headed
and moving from the lead, back to the
middle of the pack.
Bob Blomquist, who had just
driven back from the St. Lawrence Seaway late
Friday night, and his ever faithful, crew of Donna and Jim in Gracie were in complete wind sync with a
second and three firsts. They were
closely pursued by Clay Taylor in Endeavor
with three seconds. He was happy having his
heavy air crew of Ken Durrett and Gerhard Klose given the puffy conditions. Robin
Hartge and Ron Tate in Spirit were close
on the stern of Endeavor with a first
and consistent third, and in the final tally, only a point behind. Again, we had a good turnout with seven C-20s
which also included Contrary and America.
We want to thank Chris Ford
and his excellent race committee for setting up a solid race course out of the
normal heavy West River boat traffic.
