Miles River Yacht Club Regatta: I have forwarded the Miles River Yacht Club Annual Regatta
sailing instructions (SI’s). We’re racing there this Saturday,
August 1, 2009. The skipper’s meeting is at 9:15am and First
Warning Signal for all classes at 10:30 am. We will be racing on Race
Area 2 with Comets, Club 420s, Penguins and Lasers. The Stars have
a course their own without any other classes (too bad we will not be able to
sail through them since we are generally faster except in very heavy
wind). Registration is available on line and costs $30. It is not
so easy to register on www.cbyra.org You first
must get a password and then go to the Miles River Event and hit the shopping
cart to pay. I had some difficulty with the payment system but Beth Kahr
at CBYRA helped me out (410 269-1194 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 410 269-1194 end_of_the_skype_highlighting). In any event, I suggest that you
try to use the site and save time and a late $5 fee if you register after Thursday, July 30th
. So far, I know that the following boats are going: Stormy,
Picardy, Endeavor, Spirit, America and likely Mermaid. If you
plan to go let me know. Also, based on Carole’s advice, we plan to eat at
the restaurant at the yacht club and she suggests bringing a bathing suit so we
can all use the pool. I plan on leaving the WRSC dock at about 10 AM, so
if you need a tow, let me know. Robin is also available if you need a
tow.
Summer Series, July 26: What a wonderful time we had on Sunday with a good southerly
breeze and a turnout of ten Chesapeake 20s. With Nicro 20s, Albacores and
Flying Scots, the race course was crowed, especially at the marks. We
were particularly glad to see Rob MacAdam back racing as crew for Chuck Lawrence
on Enterprise. It was also the third straight weekend Rick Parks
raced with us in Nova. We hope to see all three of them many times
again. Carole McCullough came out in America and borrowed my crew,
Doug Logan. Andrew Resnick in Contrary graciously took Coutney
Logan, Doug’s wife for her first race ever. I raced with my nephew, Alex
de Tessieres and Buck Buchanan, chairman of Board of the Annapolis Maritime
Museum. It was Buck’s first return to small boat racing after many
decades (he once raced Snipes). He said he had a wonderful time, and the
racing was very intense. After running a high fever until 4AM, Clay
Taylor raced in Endeavor but said he was not at full speed. He plans to
race in all 21 days of the season.
The course was about as long as possible in the cove, but
definitely favored starboard tack to the weather mark. Usually, there
were big lifts to the right – either by going there right away on port, or
stretching out on starboard tack and waiting for lifts and headers. On
the return to the leeward mark, it was generally a broad reach, but in the last
race, Gracie went initially right and got a good breeze to pick up a
couple of places and easily secure her overall victory. Racing was so
close, that three boats tied for second through fourth place and we had to use
tie breakers. Results:
