Spring Series, June 19, 2011
We had a good turnout for the Spring Series on June 19, 2011 with six Chesapeake 20s. After a late night flight from California the day before, Clay Taylor arrived early and helped Robin step the mast for the newly-painted Spirit. He also arranged for the race committee including Pam and Thomas, and brought Hallie around and out to the cove for the races.
During the afternoon, the wind gradually back from north to southeast as the southerly tried to fill in from the high pressure system. The first race was one lap with the mark between the creeks in the cove. A slight breeze came in from the northeast and those that caught it first did well. Stormy, Spirit and Contrary were the most right and finished in that order.
For the second race, the wind continued to back and the weather mark was relocated off the point near Rhode River. Stormy got to the weather mark first, but did not head to the offset mark. In second place, Contrary graciously alerted Stormy which adjusted her course and just got around in time to lead the fleet. Osprey finished third.
For the third race the starting line was adjusted and Osprey went left and rounded just ahead of Stormy and Endeavor at the weather mark. On the downwind leg, Endeavor blanked Stormy which jibbed and went to the buoy end of the finish and just beating Endeavor by a nose.
For the fourth race, Spirit tacked to the right after the start to clear its air, and got the right lifts to the weather mark to lead the fleet. Stormy and Osprey followed in second and third. Good starts, finding the cats paws, getting the weather mark first and holding off the downwind boats were the winning combinations.
