Chesapeake 20 Spring Meeting Minutes and
Summary
The only major business that
came before the association was a motion to donate $1000.00 for the Chesapeake
20 exhibit at the Annapolis Maritime Museum offered by Clay Taylor,
Secretary. Andrew Resnik seconded the
motion. A brief discussion was held as
to the amount in the treasury of the Chesapeake 20 Association. We also noted that funds from our $2500.00
grant (less AMM expenses) would be coming in soon. Discussion was closed and a vote in favor was
received. There were no dissenting votes
or abstentions.
Next we discussed returning
to Miles River Yacht Club One Design Regatta on August 1 and 2, 2009. This is the same weekend as Governors Cup but
we think we have enough boats for a start to attend. We raced at MRYC since at least 1938 and this
represents a return after many years absence.
The Annapolis Worlds and C-20 exhibit coincide with the Rock Hall Regatta. We are choosing to go race in Annapolis and be
present for the grand opening of the Chesapeake 20 Exhibit.
Our first Speaker was Art
Libby, President of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association. He was introduced by Donna Schlegel who knows
him well. Art was received well and
presented an update on CBYRA. Art had
been a member of WRSC and raced Stars when Jack Lynch was commodore and promoter
of the Star Class. Now, he races Comets
out of SSA. He said that the mission,
activities and recent trends in online tools to register for races at CBYRA events
are on an upswing. There was also some
great news that the downturn in the economy has not adversely affected
attendance to CBYRA seminars and events which are way up. He described some of the resources they can
help with. Last year, the Chesapeake 20
Class rejoined after an absence of 37 years (we were members from 1942 until
1970). CBYRA and our class officers
encouraged C-20 racers to sign up in support of the relationship and activities
they bring forward. The CBYRA e-mail
address is office@cbyra.org and its
website is www.cbyra.org. You can join CBYRA on line which costs $55
for individual membership.
Our second speaker was Peter
Tasi who is the lead designer for the Annapolis Maritime Museum Chesapeake 20 exhibit
that he is developing in conjunction with the Hartge Nautical Museum. Peter presented a floor plan and experience
that visitors would receive upon entering the renovated McNasby’s museum
building. The presentation was top notch
including a mock up of a wall display, hand outs and necessary coordination
points and the support needed from the Chesapeake 20 Association. The exhibit will last for six months starting
on June 19, 2009. Stories, interviews
and video will be needed for the theatre and AV displays. Peter stated he has viewed and seen sailboats
classes from here to Maine, and proclaimed the Chesapeake 20’s “to be the most
elegant boat he has ever seen” for one design racing and with a great story and
history to tell to all. Here is your chance to be on film racing your
Chesapeake 20 and show your talented team work with crew, sail trim and racing
tactics. We look forward to every one
pitching in to make this a success for our Association. We need three (3) volunteers each day at the
Annapolis Maritime Museum setting up the exhibit from June 6th
through June 18th. The point
contacts are Suzanna Hartge at 410.268.1837 or hartgedesign@aol.com and Ted Weihe at picardy210@gemail.com. I can also be reached at 301.367.7528 or ctaylor@comrent.com. Peter Tasi can be reached at 410.268.7749 or pdtasidesign@gmail.com.
