A wonderful opportunity has been made to the Hartge Families:
The Annapolis Maritime Museum has invited the Hartge Nautical Museum to create a comprehensive exhibit, “Maritime History of the Hartges”, for installation in the McNasby Oyster Building, the museum's beautifully refurbished waterfront center. Jeff Holland, Director, has scheduled this opening for June 19, 2009 to coincide with their hosting the Second Annual Chesapeake 20s’ Regatta.

Capt. Dick Hartge designed and built these lovely one-design racing sailboats in the “thirties” after years of developing a number of prototypes. In 2007, the Four Rivers Heritage Association designated the fleet ”Chesapeake Historic Properties” and awarded a Mini-Grant of $2500 for the “Preservation of the Class.”  The Class is enthusiastic about participating in the new exhibition with two classic 20s’.

The exhibit will chronicle the Hartge family’s transition from piano making in Baltimore to building a boarding a house on West River; to the design and building of small fishing boats; then larger workboats, at the Hartge Yacht Yard, for their sons and other watermen. Some strories are rich with adventure; captaining private vessels, chasing outlaw watermen during the Oyster Wars; a WW II Navy signalman in the Pacific and a family honeymoon voyage aboard a schooner, while delivering lumber to Washington, D.C. A section will be devoted to “Hartge Women at the Helm”

As the designer of the Hartge Nautical Museum, in Galesville, I am pleased to undertake the design of this new exhibition; my gift to the Hartges. Production costs will be covered by a $5,000 budget. The exhibit will occupy the Museum's main gallery of 1500 square feet. We will draw upon the historical maritime and nautical memorabilia and artifacts from the Galesville museum, - - - except the immovable Hartge Piano!

In hopes that you have items related to the exhibit's storyline, I encourage you to send photos and descriptions of items for my review. I’ll respond quickly to confirm selection(s) and forward a loan agreement for you complete and return. This is the usual procedure for museums when they arrange loans from private owners. All items displayed will include brief description and the lender’s name. All loan Items will be returned shortly after the closing the exhibit.

You can contact me by mail, email or a phone call. The cut-off date for selection of loan items is May 1.

Thank You,
Peter D. Tasi
