Greetings from WRSC

On behalf of the members of the West River Sailing Club, I am delighted to welcome our participating members and guests to our 80th Annual Regatta, now dedicated to the memory of Past Commodore Bill Heintz.  Whether this is your first or your 80th Annual Regatta with us, we hope you have a great weekend and finish off the summer in style.  We take pride in our small-town culture and our beautiful club grounds.  Welcome to Galesville and WRSC and sail fast!

The Weekend

THREE days of racing: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, trophies, continental breakfasts Saturday and Sunday, post-race keg beer, cash bar, snacks and beverages all 3 days.  Light meals available for purchase Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Bill Heintz Memorial Trophy will awarded to the 1st place sailor of the class with the largest number of starters for the Regatta.

 

Junior Sailors -- 1 day, (Saturday), of racing, trophies, breakfast, post-race snacks, beverages and fun.

Annapolis to Galesville Race only -- racing, trophies, post-race snacks, beverages and keg beer.

70th Annapolis to Galesville race is free for members of WRSC and $10 for non-members.

Schedule of Events

Friday, September 4th

 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.  - Registration for Annapolis to Galesville race. Pick up Special Sailing Instructions for Big Boats.  Skippers may pre-register by mail.

9:30 a.m. - Tow boats leaves WRSC dock for Annapolis/Severn Sailing Association.

12:30 - 1:30 p.m. - Lunch break and skippers meeting on patio at Severn Sailing Association. Sandwiches & cold beverages may be available for purchase at SSA.

2:00 p.m. – Warning for Annapolis to Galesville Race. There shall be a four hour time limit for race.  Committee boat will monitor channel 68.

5:00 - 7:00 p.m. - Complimentary snacks & beverages provided by our Past Commodores for contestants served on WRSC patio.

6:00 - 7:00 p.m. - Regatta registration & informal gathering for skippers, crews & WRSC members.

6:00 - 8:00 p.m.  - Traditional Friday Night BBQ.

 Saturday, September 5th

 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. - Registration continues at WRSC.  Complimentary Continental breakfast served.

8:30 - 9:00 a.m. - Penguin/Windmill registration & complimentary Continental breakfast at the Heintz site. 

9:30 a.m. - Skippers' meeting (all fleets) at WRSC – on the lawn, near flag pole.

11:00 a.m. - Warning for first race of the day.

3:30 to 4:00 p.m. - Optimist award presentations on the patio.

4:00 to 5:00 p.m. - Snacks & beverages provide by our Past Commodores for contestants on the WRSC patio.

4:30 p.m. (approximate time) - Penguin award presentation at WRSC on the patio.    

5:00 to 7:30 p.m. – Light meals available for purchase with a cash bar.

 

Sunday, September 6th

 8:00 - 9:00 a.m.   Complimentary Continental breakfast at the WRSC.

10:00 a.m. - Warning for first race of the day.  No race to start later than 3:00 p.m.

3:00 - 5:00 p.m. (approximate time) - Complimentary snacks and beverages served on the WRSC patio.

4:30 p.m. - Award presentations on the patio.  Trophies will be mailed to non-members and will be available for club members at the annual meeting.

Advance registration is suggested and preferred for all fleets.

In Person Registration:  Participants may also register at WRSC on Friday, September 4th, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (for Annapolis race to Galesville only), or Friday, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. or Saturday, September 5th, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. (for weekend races).  Regatta sailing instructions will be available during registration on Friday and Saturday mornings at WRSC.

 

Penguin and Windmill Registration

Online Registration closes on Thursday, September 3 at 11:59 p.m.  In person Registration at WRSC continues until 9:30 on Saturday, September 5th.


Racing Information

 Friday Race from Annapolis to Galesville (A2G)

 

This race is open to ALL WRSC Fleets (including Big Boat Racers and Cruisers) and there is no entry fee for active club members.  Non-club-members may also participate in this long distance race – entry fee $10.

 Registration/entry forms must be completed for all competitors to be scored.  To constitute a race, at least three boats of that class must register.  At the discretion of the PRO, fleets may be started together or individually; indicated by class flag on Committee boat.  Time limit is 4 hours.  Committee will monitor Channel 68.

               Rendezvous - 9:30 a.m. at WRSC dock for those wishing a tow to Annapolis harbor.  Boats may also launch at Severn Sailing Association in Eastport, provided the tow vehicle and trailer are removed by Friday evening (note: catamarans cannot launch at SSA).  The race starts at 2:00 p.m., in Annapolis harbor on a line between a yellow flag on the WRSC Race Committee boat and an orange starting mark.  Special Sailing Instructions for Big Boats will be available on Friday, August 29th at WRSC, 9:30 -10:00 a.m. at registration and at SSA during lunch break, 12:30 -1:30 p.m.  Racers are strongly encouraged to carry a VHF radio or cell phone for safety.

 

Saturday – Optimist & Penguin Races


              Optimist Red, White, Blue & Green fleets and Penguin fleets - the intent is to have a three-race series on Saturday.  However, a single race shall constitute a series. Optimists Green fleet & Penguins will sail near the WRSC Dock, using a three-minute starting sequence. All other Optimists and Penguin fleets will sail with other fleets on the inside course, starting sequence specified at Skippers Meeting. The Optimist, and Penguin fleets will not sail on Sunday.

 Junior Lasers will sail on the course with Adult Lasers.  Junior Lasers will sail both Saturday and Sunday.


Saturday and Sunday Races

 Racing on Saturday and Sunday will be around drop-mark courses as specified in the Sailing Instructions.  The intent is to sail a five-race series - three on Saturday, two on Sunday.  This does not preclude sailing more than five races.  A single race shall constitute a series.

 Schedule: Skipper’s Meeting: 9:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Warning: 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.  Subsequent races will be held as soon as possible at the discretion of the individual Race Committee. Each class must have at least 3 boats to compete.

               Sailing instructions will also be available on the WRSC website www.westriversc.org and at the Saturday skippers meeting.

 

CONDITIONS – ALL CLASSES

 The WRSC Annual Regatta will be governed by the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing as adopted by US Sailing, the CBYRA rules for one-design racing, individual class rules and by the Sailing Instructions for this event.   The Regatta will count toward CBYRA High Point.

Facilities & Parking

 

WRSC is located at 4800 Riverside Dr, Galesville, MD 20765, 410-867-WRSC (9772)

 

From Annapolis: Route 2 south, turn left onto Rte 214, Central Ave. Turn right onto Rte 468 (Muddy Creek Road). Turn left onto Rte 255 east to Galesville (at traffic light, High’s on the corner). Turn left at Riverside Dr.  The club is at the end of the street on the left. 

 

You may drop off your boat at WRSC, quickly unload your gear, and immediately move your car to Carrie Weedon Science Center (a 10 minute walk from WRSC).  There is no car parking for contestants on the WRSC grounds.  The Science Center is on the south side of 255 before 468 (left side of Galesville Rd. leaving town). Shuttle service will be provided between Carrie Weedon parking lot and WRSC both morning and afternoon.  Anne Arundel police will be enforcing parking prohibitions on streets and private property.

             

WRSC has two 2000 lb. hoists and a beach for launching.

             

The Penguin & Windmill fleets may launch from the Heintz's property at 4701 Bayfields Rd., Harwood, MD. Take Route 468 (Muddy Creek Road) to a left on Cumberstone Road (just north of Route 255). At the top of the hill, turn right onto Bayfields Road. At the bottom of another hill ignore the arrow pointing to the right and go straight ahead into the Heintz driveway.  A port-a-potty will be available for your use.

             

Camping is not permitted on WRSC grounds, the adjacent county park or the Carrie Weedon Science Center.
