Attached is a beautiful photo of Chesapeake #30, Cap'n Dick Hartge's Chesapeake 20 with his family. Picture was likely taken in early 1940s. Suzanna Hartge, daughter of Cap'n Dick, shared the photo with us and it was displayed at the Annapolis Maritime Museum exhibit in 2009. The photo appears in a surreal calm.

Capsizing of Stormy

On Father's Day, Sunday June 20, 2010, Stormy capsized in front of West River Sailing Club in a weird haphazard way. Suzanna Hartge, the daughter of Cap'n Dick who built Stormy in 1939, relates the adventure below. Jane Hartge responds with her own tale of capsizing with Cap'n Dick, her husband.

We started the 2010 Racing season with a wonderful breeze from the East/South East of 8-12 knots. The tune ups earlier in the month were canceled.

The Endeavor 2,1,1
Gracie 1,2,2
Osprey DNS,3,3

The first and second races were decided by 1/2 a boat length and 2 feet, respectively. The Endeavor was first to the windward mark each leg of the race with over 900 lbs of 4 crew. Then Gracie did a great job accelerating on the down wind legs with its three person lighter crew. Great Racing!

NOR - Rock Hall

Notice of Race (NOR) for the Rock Hall One Design Regatta. Races will include the famous "Chester River Race" and then two days of round the bouy racing. Dates are June 11, 12 and 13th. We will tow over on Thursday June 10 and tow back on June 13th. The winning the Morris Trophy for the River Race is our goal. The last Chesapeake 20 to win this was The Endeavor #49 which corrected out on the handicap ahead of 11 other racers including A-CATS and on log sailing canoe. http://rockhallyachtclub.org/regatta.htm We may use the US Sailing Regatta Network online registration system.

Death of Laurence Hartge

Laurence Hartge passed away peacefully on January 18, 2010. There will be a memorial service for him at Christ Episcopal Church in Galesville, Md, Saturday, January 23rd at 3 pm. Also, below is a resolution honoring Laurence which was written by the Chesapeake 20 Association and details his many contributions to West River Sailing Club and our class.

Restoration of Magic

Alex de Tessieres is currently restoring Magic #111 (formerly Babs and possibly Defender) built by Cap'n Dick in 1937. He has removed the bottom and found that the keel was broken so he will need to replace all of the ribs with a new keel and centerboard box. As usually, the job got bigger once you opened up the bottom. But, the side planks, ribs and deck appear to be in surprisingly good condition.

President's Cup Results - ca 1937

Race results from President's Cup Regatta in Washington Channel with War College in background, ca 1937. Vanity with Os Ownings won. Mermaid with Oscar Harge, 2nd; and Spray (chine 20) in third. Round-bottom 20s in order of finish were: Vanity, Mermaid, Shady Lady and Challenger. Chine 20s were Spray, Cricket 11, Myray, Seawitch II and Lady Avon. Chesapeake 16s in order were Dot (Hazzard), No-Name (Fifer), Sue (A Dixon) and Swan (C. Dixon).

History of Waterlous #20

Waterlous # 20

Waterlous is hull #20. According to Jane Hartge, she was built by Cap'n Dick Hartge in 1952 (probably his last 20) and traded to Louis (Buster) Phipps in exchange for a Roadmaster Buck. Buster had a car dealership on West Street, Annapolis.

Jane named her Galatea for Pygmalion’s classic statue come-to-life. Louis did not think much of the name and renamed her Waterlous, supposedly for himself. She has a slight chine, is very pretty and very fast according to Jane. Buster did not race her and eventually sold her to William Loux in 1966. After that, the class lost track of her until contacted by Roger Longenecker of Reading, Pennsylvania.

Roger Longenecker purchased the boat over 30 years ago with the intention to restore her. He said that she had sailed out of Betterton, off the Sassafras, MD. She was stored in his barn next to his home which is now for sale and he needed to get rid of the boat since he no longer had storage space. The boat is in poor shape with extensive rot in the aft section, very old sails and a wooden mast in good condition. She can be restored, and the hull does not appear to be hogged.

Ted Weihe and Dan Donahue traveled to Reading on December 17, 2009 and picked up the boat (with help from Roger’s front-end loader) and trailered her back to West River Sailing Club.

Chesapeake 20 Picardy #210 for Sale

I have decided to sell Picardy and focus my racing on Stormy #26. I had Picardy built by Peter Bell Jr. in 2003. She is the best built and stiffest Chesapeake 20 with an excellent race record. Recently, e-yacht builders totally refurbished Picardy to more than pristine conditions in removing all scratches, replacing most hardware and running rigging, and repainting the bottom. She was featured at the 2009 Annapolis Sailboat Show. Picardy comes with up-to-date sails, seldom-used trailer and cover that is in excellent shape. I paid $17,000 for Picardy in 2003. A replacement value today with higher materials and labor costs would be in the mid-20s. I am willing to sell Picardy for $15,000 to someone that will participate in our Chesapeake 20 fleet. Here is a photo of Cutty Sark, #77 which is probably taken in 1941 by Mills Traylor who raced Lill II #97 and competed against Buddy Hartge and others.

Cutty Sark was built by Cap'n Dick in 1941 and owned by Jimmy Dunleavy, Buddy Hartge and Dick Hartge, Boonie Harding, Jack Sommerville, Francis Cole and Bobby Orme. Cutty Sark was burned for firewood in the winter of 1975 in Galesville, Md.

Mills Traylor & Lill II #97

Archer Mills Traylor was an early West River Sailing Club member and bought Lill II #97, built by Cap'n Dick Hartge in 1941. Photos were provided by his great ganddaughter, Julie McKinney including for Shamrock #6 which he crewed on. Mills Traylor won the 4th Rock Hall Regatta in Lill II, ca 1941. History of Chesapeake 16s

The Chesapeake 16s have a parallel history with the Chesapeake 20s, but did not survive as a class after World War II. See details and photos below. Laurence Hartge says that "several of us 'whippersnappers' wanted less expensive boats, and the SIXTEENS were developed. I built my Aloha, and there were also the Rascal, Dot and Adios racing against other 16 footers primarily from Herring Bay. We had some great races...pretty inventive courses and rules, as I recall. (Talk 1/27,2007 at WRSC).
